what is Serum potassium .

Serum potassium is the amount of potassium present in the blood serum, the liquid portion of your blood that remains after red blood cells have been removed. Potassium is a mineral that acts as an electrolyte in your body. Electrolytes are minerals that help conduct electricity throughout your body. They play a crucial role in many bodily functions, including:

* Muscle contractions, including those of your heart
* Nerve impulses
* Maintaining fluid balance within cells

A normal serum potassium level falls within the range of 3.5 to 5.5 milliequivalents per liter (mEq/L).

Potassium levels that fall outside this range can indicate an underlying health condition. If your doctor suspects you have an electrolyte imbalance, they may order a potassium blood test as part of a routine checkup or to monitor certain medications that can affect potassium levels. The test is a simple blood draw.
